Your Care With OHMI Midwives

Inquiring minds want to know… what does care with a home birth midwife actually look like?

Choosing where and with whom to give birth is an important decision. We believe you deserve to understand what your care will look like, what services are available, and what to expect along the way.

At OHMI Midwives, we bring together the art of traditional midwifery and the benefits of modern clinical care.

Our holistic, evidence-informed approach honors the natural physiology of pregnancy and birth while incorporating clinical assessments, screening, and medical resources when appropriate or desired.

We believe that informed decision-making is central to respectful maternity care. Through education, individualized recommendations, and shared decision-making, we support families in making choices that reflect their needs, values, and circumstances.

We welcome families of all backgrounds, beliefs, and identities, providing compassionate, inclusive care without judgment.

Schedule of Care

Prenatal Care

Our prenatal appointments are generally one hour in length, allowing time to assess your health and your baby's well-being, answer questions, explore your options, and build a trusting relationship with your midwives.

We follow a consistent schedule while allowing flexibility for individual needs.

Your prenatal visit schedule:

  • Beginning of care through 36 weeks: Every four weeks.

  • 36–40 weeks: Every two weeks for healthy, low-risk pregnancies

  • After 40 weeks: Weekly until birth

Important note: More frequent appointments or clinical check-ins may be recommended based on your individual circumstances.

During prenatal visits: we assess maternal and fetal well-being (clinical checks, review nutrition and exercise, discuss emotional and mental health). We will review any recommended screenings and testing, provide education, and prepare for birth and postpartum recovery.

On-going assessments: We continually evaluate whether homebirth remains an appropriate option as your pregnancy progresses. Additional assessments or referrals may be requested or recommended at any point based on your individual needs or clinical concerns.

When additional evaluation, consultation, or referral is recommended, we'll discuss the reasons and help you understand your options.

Postpartum & Newborn Care

Your care doesn't end when your baby is born!

We continue supporting you and your newborn throughout the first six weeks after birth, with a combination of home visits, comprehensive phone assessments, and follow-up care.

Your postpartum care schedule:

  • The day after birth: A thorough in-home visit to assess your recovery, your baby's health, feeding, and adjustment during the first day.

  • 3 days postpartum: A second home visit for continued maternal and newborn assessments, including recovery, feeding, and overall well-being.

  • 1 week postpartum: A comprehensive phone consultation to evaluate how you and your baby are doing and determine whether an additional in-person visit is needed.

  • 2 weeks postpartum: Another comprehensive phone consultation to assess continued recovery, newborn well-being, feeding, and any emerging concerns. An in-person appointment can be arranged when indicated.

  • 4 weeks postpartum: An email check-in to see how your family is adjusting and address any questions or concerns.

  • 6 weeks postpartum: A final in-office visit for a comprehensive maternal and newborn evaluation and the completion of your midwifery care.

Additional assessments or referrals may be requested or recommended at any point based on your individual needs or clinical concerns.

Labor & Birth

When will your midwives come to you?

During early labor, we'll generally stay in communication by phone, checking in regularly to assess your progress, how you're coping, and how you and your baby are doing. We may arrange an in-person assessment as needed.

We typically come to your home when:

  • You're in active labor: Contractions are strong, consistent, and generally occurring every 4–5 minutes.

  • You need additional support: You're having difficulty coping, have questions or concerns, or would benefit from an in-person assessment.

  • A clinical assessment is needed: Your midwives identify something that warrants closer evaluation, regardless of your stage of labor.

Contraction patterns are just one part of the picture. We consider your individual circumstances, labor history, symptoms, and overall well-being when determining when to join you in person.

Who will attend your birth?

Our goal is to attend births with a three-person team, including at least one primary midwife, a second midwife or a skilled birth assistant, and a midwifery student.

All members of our birth team are trained to provide skilled assistance and maintain current neonatal resuscitation and CPR training.

Immediate Postpartum Care

What happens immediately after birth?

After welcoming your baby, we generally remain in your home for approximately 2–3 hours to monitor your recovery, assess your newborn, support early  feeding, and ensure that you and your baby are stable before we leave.

Before departing, we'll thoroughly review warning signs that require attention, when to contact us, and what to expect during the first 24 hours after birth.

We remain on call for your family and return for your first postpartum home visit the following day. The timing is individualized and may not be exactly 24 hours after birth.

We'll discuss these recommendations and options during pregnancy, helping you make informed decisions and coordinate any additional services your baby may need.
